can & could的慣用表達

1. cannot help ~ing

  cannot help ~ing：忍不住；不禁

  # 動詞help這邊不是“幫助”的意思，而是以

  “避免”(= avoid)的意義被使用。

  Terry can't help smiling whenever he sees his daughter.

  Terry 每一次看到他的女兒，都會禁不住微笑。

  → Terry 每一次看到他的女兒，就會微笑。

  I can't help loving Claire. 

  我忍不住去愛Claire。 

  → 我非常愛Claire。

   

   Susan couldn't help overhearing the conversation

      Jeremy and Geoffrey were having.

   Susan禁不住偷聽 Jeremy 和 Geoffrey的對話。

   →Susan只能偷聽Jeremy和Geoffrey的對話。

 

  # 不僅是動名詞 (~ing) ，代名詞it也可以被使用。

    具有“我禁不住~”或“我禁不住~~了”的意思。

    

  I am sorry I ate all your food. But I couldn't help it.

  抱歉我吃光你的食物。但是，我忍不住。

   

   Lily screams every time she sees a bird.   

    She's afraid of it. She can't help it.

  Lily每次看到一隻鳥都會尖叫。她很害怕牠。她實在忍不住。

2. cannot~ too ~

cannot ~ too ~：再...也不為過；越...越好

  

  I cannot eat too much hamburgers.

 我沒辦法吃太多的漢堡。

 →我因為太喜歡漢堡，吃再多也不為過。(吃不膩的)

    → 這件事特別地重要。

    I can't emphasize enough how much I love James.

    我再強調我有多愛James也不夠。

    →我非常愛James。

 

  

3. cannot~ without

cannot ~ without ~：沒有...就不能....                    → 一定...

 I cannot watch a movie without falling asleep.

 我沒睡覺就沒辦法看電影。

 → 我看電影的話，一定會睡覺。

  I cannot sit a test without making a stupid mistake.

  我不犯個愚蠢的錯誤就沒辦法考試。

     → 我考試一定會犯愚蠢的錯誤。

         # sit a test: 考試

  I could not cook without burning things.

     我不燒焦東西就沒辦法煮菜。

   → 我煮菜一定會把東西燒焦。
