也可用來表達許可、恭順和推測，

1. 能力的表現
can: 能夠~(現在的能力)
could: 過去能夠~(過去的能力)

# 要表現未來的能力 ...will can...?
→ 因為助動詞不可以連用的關係
我們可以使用 can 的代替表現方式 be able to！
將來能夠~(未來的能力): will be able to
# can的完成式也可以使用 be able to！
I can speak English
我會說英文。 [現在]
= I'm able to speak English.
I could speak English
我當時會說英文。 [過去]
= I was able to speak English.
I will be able to speak English.
我將來會說英文。 [未來]
I have been able to speak English.
我已經會說英文。 [現在完成]
I had been able to speak English.
我當時已經會說英文。 [過去完成]
I will have been able to speak English.
我將能夠說英文。[未來完成]
例句練習：
I can play computer games for hours without stopping.
我能玩電腦遊戲好幾個小時都不停下來。
But I can't read a book for ten minutes.
但是我無法讀書讀十分鐘。
When I was a child, I could swim all day long.
當我還是小孩子的時候，我能夠游泳游一整天。
But I could never learn to ride a bicycle.

2. 許可和恭順的表現
徵求許可時，或是恭順、謙恭地拜託對方時使用
You can borrow my notebook if you want to.

You can come to me when you need some to talk to, okay?
當你需要一些錢時，你可以來找我，知道嗎？[許可]
Can I use your cellphone?
我可以用你的手機嗎？[恭順]
Could you call me back some other time? I'm super busy
right now.
你可以改天再打給我嗎？我現在非常忙碌。[恭順]
表現恭順時，could會比can更有禮貌。這個時候，
could就不當成過去時態，請當成現在式使用。
3. 推測的表現
Can he really be a spy? → can以疑問的型式使用的話，
他真的會是間諜嗎？ 是強烈懷疑的表現
The rumors can't be true. → can't 是不一定、不確定的推測
這謠言不會是真的。
If she tries really hard, she could pass the exam.
如果他真得試著努力的話，他也許能通過考試也說不定。
(這裡的could不是過去的能力，而是不確定性的假設
，把它當成現在式解釋。)
